We're going to have some fun when Cosy Sheridan comes to town. For close to fifteen years now she's been inflicting her wicked satire and peddling her charm with unbridled energy and copious amounts of joy. There's a serious Ms. Sheridan, too, who is foremost among contemporary songwriters in giving voice to the lives of women. Uniquely, she fuses myth with modern culture, Persephone with Botox: all the excess, wry humor, fear, beauty, and love. She is frank, feisty, fragile, sublimely and devilishly funny, at home everywhere from the Dr. Demento show to Carnegie Hall. She has a real musical sense.

Dirty Linen lauds her, "tender/tough voice, lively guitar playing, and brassy vulnerability."

Cosy Sheridan made her big splash in 1992. Like Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Michelle Shocked, and John Gorka, she won the New Folk Award at Kerrville, but unlike them, she also took the Telluride Bluegrass Troubadour Award. She is a transplanted New Englander, having grown up in Concord, New Hampshire, now at home (when she isn't touring) in Moab, Utah. She'll be joined in concert by partner T. R. Richie, who plays guitar and bass and is also an award-winning song writer. Heed the advice of Catie Curtis: "Somewhere in the uncharted territory of Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Dr. Ruth, and Deepak Chopra is YOU at a Cosy Sheridan concert--laughing and crying, laughing and crying. Go there."

Opening the show will be A Glass of Water, the refreshing a cappella duo of Sophia Smith-Savedoff and Emily Hurst, who also happen to be Cornell students. With spirit and whimsy they blend their voices on traditionally based songs, including ballads from Appalachia and the British Isles and old shape note hymns. They have a remarkable knack for creating distinctive arrangements and weaving intricate vocal lines. Their blithe singing shows a deep affection and respect for their eclectic sources.

Tickets are available at Ludgate Farm Market, Ithaca Guitar Works, Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail: SASE to CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851.
