Les Sampou in Concert
Les Sampou is a woman who sings the blues. She's known equally for her guttural alto and for her amazing slide guitar work. This passionate singer explores classic country blues and performs her own roots-rock, gutsy blues originals. Les is often compared with Bonnie Raitt or Rory Block for her singing and with Chris Smither for her guitar mastery. A review in Sing Out! last year noted that her guitar playing is authoritative and that she sings, "with a voice that understands the nuances and poetry of the blues. Depending on the song, she sounds tough, sweet, sexy or sly." Les, who is self-taught, got her musical start as a busker, choosing the depths of Boston's Haymarket subway stop as her first stage, and then graduating to the circuit of mostly Boston bars. In 1989 her career got serious. She began writing and performing her own material and started touring. Since then Les has stayed on the road much of the year. She has been invited not only to folk and blues festivals, but also jazz festivals. She even picked up the coveted Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Award. Tickets are available at Ithaca Guitar Works, Colophon Books (formerly Borealis Bookstore), Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, Bound for Glory, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail from CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851. For information about the concert, contact
