Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer named best of Bound for Glory

At the October 20, 2002 edition of WVBR's Bound for Glory, host and founder Phil Shapiro announced that the Oregon-based folk duo of Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer has won the Fourth Annual Best of Bound for Glory Award. The award recognizes the fans' favorite from the recently concluded 35th season of Bound for Glory, a Sunday night staple on WVBR-FM, and North America's longest running live folk concert broadcast.

This year's award is particularly poignant because Dave Carter died suddenly and unexpectedly this past July. His death is a major loss to America's folk music community. Tracy Grammer continues to share Dave's music with folk audiences nationwide.

The winner was chosen by members of the Friends of Bound for Glory, a non-profit organization set up by fans in 1996 to raise money for and awareness of the program. This year's recipient of the Best of Bound for Glory Award joins past honorees Mustard's Retreat, Small Potatoes, and Tanglefoot.

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer became a major force in American folk music in a very short time. Dave Carter's songs were direct and to the point, full of wonderful, quirky, spiritual imagery, and highly respectful of the American folk tradition. Many people have covered his tunes, before as well as after his death. We are assured that there are a lot more Dave Carter songs extant than were issued on the duo's three CD's, and that we'll get to hear a lot more of them over the next few years.

Tracy Grammer, upon being told of this award said "wherever Dave is right now, I know he's smiling".

Host Phil Shapiro commented, "When we started the idea of the Best of Bound for Glory Award, none of us were thinking that it might be awarded posthumously. The folk world is still struggling with Dave Carter's untimely passing. But few will argue that their Bound for Glory show of September, 2001 was a fantastic evening."

WVBR's Bound for Glory, now celebrating its 36th year, broadcasts live from the Caf=E9 at Anabel Taylor Hall at Cornell University on Sunday nights from 8 to 11. Performers play live sets at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 PM. Admission to the live audience is free and open to anyone. During Cornell breaks, Phil Shapiro plays traditional and modern folk albums from WVBR's studios. Bound for Glory may be heard on WVBR-FM, 93.5 and 105.5, and also live over the internet at http://www.wvbr.com.

Host Phil Shapiro brought Bound for Glory with him when he moved to Ithaca in September 1967, putting folk and acoustic musicians on the air almost immediately. The show has had the same format since 1969, featuring a folk concert with a live audience on 33 Sundays every year, for a total of well over 1000 live concert broadcasts. These concerts have featured some of the most renowned voices in American, Canadian, and European Folk Music.

Bound for Glory's 36th season continues on October 27 with Fishken and Groves. Upcoming shows include Tanglefoot on November 3rd, Sparky and Rhonda Rucker on November 10th, Lissa Schneckenburger with Ted Davis and Corey DiMario on November 17th, and Small Potatoes on November 24th. The last live show of the season is December 8th, with the Hickory Project.
