When I think of David Massengill, I think in terms of pairs, some complementary, some contradictory. He is a gentle person, but a powerful performer. He is equally skilled as a songwriter and storyteller. His songs are full of narrative and allegory; his stories sing in a lyrical cadence and rhythm. A star of the sophisticated Greenwich Village folk scene for a more than a decade, he doesn't try to disguise his roots in rural Tennessee hills. His songs and stories are fine-tuned and exquisitely crafted, but his performance and delivery are all natural. Exploring very contemporary themes, he somehow seems old fashioned.
Dirty Linen Magazine ranks him with, "Woody Guthrie, Dylan, and Paul Simon," while the New York Times calls him a, "respected cult figure," whatever that may be. My Name Joe may be his most famous song. It's the story of a true incident that occurred in a kitchen of an Upper West Side restaurant. Some other songs of his you might not recognize. They have been widely covered, but you might have thought them to be traditional.
